5 tips to help you create stunning Autumnal family photos

As we head into Autumn I get especially excited about photographing families outdoors and I wanted to share some of my top shooting and session preparation tips along with images from a collective of fantastic UK photographers to inspire when you go out and shoot yourself.

Tip 1 : Schedule your session when the light is best

With the evenings closing in, golden hour is getting earlier (currently the sun is setting around 6:20pm in the South). This is great news as this allows families with younger children to meet for photo shoots without majorly disrupting their bedtime routine.  I am now starting my family shoots now around 4:30pm so families have time to go home after school, change, have something to eat and then meet up.

Also, don’t forget when scheduling your shoots the clocks change on the Sunday 28th October so you will need to start an hour earlier!.

Tip 2:  Help your clients with simple visual what to wear guides

Ahead of my Autumn mini shoots, I give my families a visual guide of what colours work really well against an autumnal backdrop. I have Pinterest boards available (you can see my board here) and new for 2018 I have created a 1-minute inspiration video via Animoto.

I lean towards blues, yellows, burgundy and brown as I like a strong contrast pallet in my imagery. I also find that these string complimentary colours print really well in the final product.

P.S If you would like to trial Animoto and save up to 50% on a professional subscription, please drop me a message via the contact form at the end of this blog and I will be in touch

Tip 3: Scout your locations ahead of time and take test shots

Locations can change very quickly (especially here in Surrey), A lot of our woodland is managed and I have returned to locations to find key backdrops I have used completely changed.

What I like to do is head to the location a few days before the shoot itself, at approximately the same time, so I can asses where I will shoot in what order. The location I am currently favouring loses the light at the bottom of the valley early and around 5:45pm we have to move onto a second area which is much higher up.

The shots on the right hand side are my test shots taken on the 70-200 2.8 so I can get a real feel of how the final images on my shoot will come out.

Tip 4: Whilst shooting think about how the images could be displayed

Finally when shooting think about the variety of images and the mix of landscape and portrait images that you are shooting (or shoot wide enough that you can crop to portrait if needed).

Chat to your clients before your shoot about where they envisage the images being up in their home. If you are passionate about albums for example then this can change how you shoot on the day knowing that you might be looking for images that sit well as triptych storytelling images across one page.

My supplier of choice is Digitalab and they have been working very hard behind the scenes to develop new tools to help clients visualise their images on display (as an example the image on the right). To be the first to hear when they launch this new service visit their Facebook page here.

Tip 5: Watch the following video for autumn photography inspiration!

There are so many incredible professional photographers in the UK and I am lucky to have a lot of them as part of my online community (if you would like to join visit here).

I find seeing other photographers images of the same season incredibly inspiring and here are examples using different light, styling, composition and different lenses.

A huge thank to all of the photographers who contributed – if you would like to go and look at more of their work their websites are below.

Professional Photography Inspiration – family photography

Professional Photography Inspiration – family photography

photography inspiration - family photography

Throughout the year I work with a very talented group of professional photographers on my 12 month mentoring programme and I wanted to share some of the amazing images they have been creating! Each month we will each publish one of our favourite recent images around a theme and this months theme is family photography. Here is my contribution for the month of July Thanks

For this months blog I thought I would share a recent extended family shoot which was booked for the Dads birthday. Mum & Dad have 3 children and between them they have 8 grandchildren so the shoot was for 16 people in total. We shot around 6pm (9pm would have been even better but that is a big ask for such a big group travelling to get to the location) and I started with the largest group shot first. I then worked my way though each family group ending with portraits of the grandchildren.

As you can see the styling is very important for a family of this size and ahead of the shoot I sent the family my pinterest boards for colours and they did an amazing job!

As I knew the family were then all together for dinner than evening I edited a choice few shots as soon as I got home and created a video using Animoto which I sent over and they watched it on the TV together.

It was such a fun shoot but what I love the most is the idea that these images may stay on the wall for potentially generations to come. If you are interested in an extended family shoot more details can be found here

Family & Child Photographer : my Summer

Family & Child Photographer : my Summer

Its been an incredibly busy Summer of family & child photo-shoots, so I thought I would share a few of my favourite images from those shoots I can share (some are still being kept as surprise presents for Grandparents)…

An outdoor family photo shoot in Poole, Dorset

This photo session took place in the grounds of a stunning house and gardens in Dorset. The location had some stunning tree lined avenues, huge bamboo bushes and lots of space for the kids to run around in. I especially loved the bamboo garden which I thought made a really great backdrop for a family shoot.

A family photo-shoot at Alice Holt, Hampshire

This shoot just goes to show how lucky I am to work with such great families. It rained pretty much the entire shoot, and a lot of the test images had mum, dad and the kids in their rain jackets and then we would whip them off for the shoot. One of my favourite images was of the youngest family member inside the tunnel. I had to climb right inside to get the shot but it was worth it! I also think the roundabout shot is great fun but I must say I did make a little bit of a fool of myself as I fell off while trying to get this shot. Like a true professional photographer I kept my camera aloft so only my pride was hurt 🙂 These were taken in Alice Holt forest which is well worth a visit if you live in Hampshire. It also has a high ropes course for the kids as well as lots of really great play areas. www.forestry.gov.uk/aliceholt

An extended family shoot in Hemel Hempstead

Boxmoor is one of my favourite locations to photograph at as its very local to me and also it has some stunning fields which are easily accessible for family shoots. This family shoot was bought for mum by her 2 daughters and the entire family came along for the shoot. It was so lovely to get all of the grandchildren together and I have since photographed both family’s separately too so now I feel as if I know them really well.

A family photo-shoot in Buckinghamshire

These images were taken in Buckinghamshire and Mum is actually a great photographer herself. She wanted some family shots where she was also in the photos, something us photographers often forget to do. The 4 children were such great fun and the eldest was amazing at giving me beautiful thoughtful expressions.

Family photo shoot in Exeter, Devon

A little further than my usual locations, this summer I travelled down to Exeter in Devon for another extended family photo shoot. This shoot was bought by the sons and daughters for their dads birthday as an opportunity to get one great group shot of them all as well as Granddad with his grandchildren.  Before the shoot I also spent half a day with one of the family on a 1-2-1 session teaching her more about how to use her DSLR to get great photos everyday. A really fun afternoon and lovely to spend time with a family that clearly have so much love for one another.

Child Photographer in Hemel Hempstead

This family shoot was again up at Boxmoor in Hemel Hempstead. We had a glorious day of sunshine and real fun searching for bugs in the logs and long grass and trying to catch the flying seeds in the field.

An indoor / outdoor family photo shoot in St Albans, Clarence Park

I love working with families in their home and their home and then heading outdoors – the kids have an opportunity to get to know me and show me around their room and then by the time we head to the park we are ready to play. The girls looked gorgeous in their dresses but I loved that Mum & Dad would still let them climb their favourite tree in them – my kind of family 🙂

An photo-shoot at home to celebrate the arrival on a new baby

This is the second time I have photographed this family and I loved meeting their new addition. We started the session in their daughters room and then progressed to a Peppa Pig cake baking session.
